The importance of safe indoor air quality for fitness centers and their re-opening decisions

2020 is finally over and the start of a new year is among us. A common goal of many in the new year is the resolution of making healthier choices and exercising more.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it significantly difficult for fitness facilities to guarantee safety to their members. COVID-19 is an airborne transmissive virus, which means it is able to be spread from person to person through particles in the air.

Keep in mind that, the use of masks to prevent solid and liquid particles like saliva from spreading, but they do not prevent airborne particulates from travelling from person to person.

In fitness centers where people are breathing heavily while they exercise and sharing equipment like weights and work out machines, it is incredibly hard to ensure safety to members and staff from viruses and other harmful airborne pathogens.

Although there is no absolute way to remove risks, there are ways to significantly reduce the threats and increase protection to staff and clients. Here are some ways to help keep the air in fitness centers clean:

Monitor your air

  • Monitoring is the key when it comes to safe, clean indoor air quality. If there is no data confirming problems in your air quality, there is no way to prove whether or not your space has good air quality.
  • The truth is most people have no idea how clean their indoor air is, and its safety implications.

Manage your air ventilation

  1. There are a few things you can do to help control your air and make sure fresher, cleaner air is being circulated into your space.
  2. If you are concerned with air quality in a certain space in your gym, make sure you keep that space as open as possible to let in air flow:
  • Open any windows, open any doors and try to keep the space empty from people until you feel more comfortable with the safety of the air.
  • Limit the number of people in the space at any point in time
  • Turn on any fans and other ventilation systems that enhance air flow in the room

Purify your air

  • If you really do not feel confident in your air quality and want to make a larger impact, air purifiers are a good investment to make.
  • There are a lot of different types of air purifiers on the market that are made from very different technologies. It is best to consult with an expert to understand the differences between each type of purification technique that exists, what is best for your facilities size and sanitizing needs.
  • Some air purification techniques are made possible by surface activation, while some are based on stand-alone independent healers, or even through your HVAC system.
  • Each of them has its pros and cons, various levels of costs, and most importantly, the level of cleaning they are able to achieve in the air, which should be the most important factor as you evaluate these options.
